Martyn Jackson violin and and Stephen Meakins piano
St Peter's Church Burnley
24th May 2008

St Peter's Saturday morning concerts are a wonderful example of a showcase for talented musicians, singers and classical music specialists that delight the large audience who come each week to see what is on offer for such a small ticket price.

The audience really had a tremendous treat in store on the 24th May 08 when two very talented young virtuosi performed for their enjoyment a programme of Beethoven, Paganini and Ysa˙e.

Martyn Jackson -Violin and Stephen Meakins - piano, played exceptionally well together though their collaboration is a fairly recent one. They were sensitive to each other and gave each other space to express their own individual talents.

The programme was Beethoven's Sonata No1 in D major for Violin and piano, Paganini's La Campanella in an arrangement by Fritz Kreisler and a lesser known piece Ysa˙e's Poeme Elegiaque in D Minor, that was quite splendid. All the pieces were played with sensitivity and superb musical interpretation. It was pure pleasure to sit on a summer morning with the hustle and bustle of Saturday morning traffic outside and be transported to the musical landscape created by these two 20 year old accomplished and mature musicians

Both soloists study at the Royal College of Music in London. Martyn was string semi finalist in the BBC's Young Musician of the Year in 2006. They gave excellent introductions to each of the works, which got the tone of the introduction just right. So many musicians cannot introduce their choices of music, but it really adds to the audience's pleasure when this is nicely done as it was here.

I have heard Martyn play in the past and he just gets better every year. His talent shines like a beacon and his easy way with the audience will stand him in good stead in his career. Watch out for him as his will be a force to be reckoned with in a very short time as also will Stephen
